Avoiding West Nile Virus

 

West Nile virus affects the central nervous system and is spread by infected mosquitoes. Infected people usually begin to develop symptoms in 3 to 14 days. Here are a few common sense tips to help avoid becoming infected:

 

·         Wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants and socks when outdoors.

·         Mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing, so spray clothes with repellent containing permethrin or DEET will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent containing DEET on the skin under your clothing.

·         Peak mosquito hours are dusk to dawn, so avoid area where mosquitoes are present during these hours.

·         Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, so drain any standing water in areas near your home.

·         Make sure screen doors and windows are in good condition to keep mosquitoes out.
