Preventing muscle cramps

 

Muscle cramps can ruin the perfect workout, sideline a long distance runner, or even interrupt a good night’s sleep. With summertime approaching, more people will be outdoors exercising and engaging in physical activities. To enjoy cramp free activities, follow these simple tips:

 

The cause of muscle cramps can be anything from overly high-heeled shoes to lack of sodium.

To prevent cramps, follow these two tips:

 

·         Drink a lot of water – 64 ounces a day is recommended. Exercise and extreme heat may necessitate drinking even more than the recommended minimum. Drinking enough water to keep hydrated can prevent muscle cramps.

·         Consume enough sodium – Although most people probably don’t suffer from a lack of sodium, it could lead to muscle cramps.

·         Other factors that can contribute to muscle cramps include potassium and calcium losses. Try consuming foods such as banana, potatoes, spinach and low-fat dairy products to help ward off cramps.
